Railway

Ground improvement techniques keep railway infrastructure on track. Cement grouting stabilizes underlying soils to stop settlement. Compaction grouting stabilizes and reinforces soils, re-levels tracks, and stabilizes sinkholes. Polyurethane grouting also re-levels tracks. Injection systems treat expansive soils to control heave. Amtrak's electrification of the corridor between New Haven, CT, and Boston, MA, involves lowering several track sections. Tracks below the Charles Street Bridge in Providence, RI, were to be lowered approximately 2 feet, which raised concerns about the stability of the existing old, stone masonry bridge abutment wall. To accomplish the work effectively with minimal interruption to traffic, Hayward Baker used jet grouting to construct a soilcrete mass on the back wall of the abutment to increase stability.

Charles Street Bridge, Providence, RI
